What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a procedure that is performed by a trained and skilled physical therapist, where a thin needle will penetrate the skin in order to treat underlying muscle trigger points for movement impairment and pain. Our chiropractor in Harrisburg or Concord can perform the procedure.

What Is a Trigger Point?

A trigger point is a tight band in your muscle fiber that disrupts the range of motion and function of the muscle. It can cause local tenderness and pain. When the procedure is applied to the trigger point, it decreases the tightness and helps increase blood flow.

It is Different Than Acupuncture

Dry needling is not the same thing as acupuncture, even though it uses a similar tool. Acupuncture is based on Eastern medicine and dry needling is based in Western medicine. Research shows that dry needling performed by a chiropractor in tissue and muscles around pain points also reduces sensitivity and pain more than just doing it in a certain pain point.

When Is Dry Needling Necessary?

Dry needling will treat muscle tissues and the goal is to reduce shoulder pain and restore function. It is not usually a standalone procedure and is often part of a larger physical therapy and chiropractic care approach that incorporates other physical therapy interventions.

It can be used to treat different musculoskeletal issues, such as hip, back, heel, neck, and shoulder pain. It is often used to treat sports injuries and can also treat fibromyalgia. It is a safe and effective approach for managing and treating pain but some insurance companies don’t cover the costs.

Are There Side Effects to Dry Needling?

The side effects are usually mild and can include some bruising or bleeding around the injection site. You may also notice some temporary soreness. It is important that you go to a reputable place for dry needling in order to make sure that sterile needles are used. If you do not, you could be at risk for contracting a blood illness.
